As we near the end of the year I wanted to pause momentarily to reflect upon the progress we’ve made over the last twelve months in expanding our economic development programs. A survey of our Fairfax City Connected blog and the EDA’s Facebook page highlight just how busy 2018 was for economic development in Fairfax City. The Economic Development Authority spearheaded a number of new programs designed to directly connect residents and visitors with city businesses; in November, for example, the EDA (in partnership with the OED) led the charge on a successful promotion designed to leverage the excitement of Small Business Saturday, and in December the City held its first ever holiday window decorating contest. December also celebrated the graduation of Blue Ridge Dynamics from the Mason Enterprise Center – Fairfax with the inaugural City Connected incentive grant designed to encourage businesses to continue growing in Fairfax City. In 2018 we also focused on expanding partnerships; the OED increased its level of collaboration with George Mason University and established new channels of communication with property owners throughout the city. Meanwhile, the EDA continued working with property owners to identify a clear vision for future use and property development for business attraction. 2018 was a success in large part, because of our dedicated volunteers and staff. To our elected officials, our Economic Development Authority commissioners, the office of economic development staff here in City Hall, and all city employees who support the economic development programs in Fairfax, THANK YOU for making 2018 so successful. 2019 will be just as busy with new and exciting programs, and the return of some of our most successful programs as well. I hope you find time this holiday season to visit some of our local businesses, and I wish you and your families a very happy new year! – Chris
