What makes Capital Brandworks unique in Fairfax City?
I think most people think of restaurants and small shops and not necessarily “production” or “light manufacturing” when they think of the city. We like that we add something a little different than what’s expected.
How many years have you been in Fairfax City and what encouraged you to take the leap to get started?
Our location has been home to a print shop for some 25 years under different names and ownerships. Capital Brandworks assumed ownership and opened its doors in the city in January 2018. The intersection of art (t-shirt designs) and science (the production process) is what interested me and is what fuels our passion to grow and learn something new every day.
What inspired you to open a business in Fairfax City?
The majority of our team grew up and attended school in the area, and the fact that there was an existing print shop available so centrally located made it a no brainer.
What do you enjoy most about having a business in Fairfax City?
It has a very “small town” feel to it for being located in such a large metropolitan area.
How has Capital Brandworks changed since its opening?
I started the company in 2015 with my brother in a spare bedroom and we outsourced all the production work. Now we’re in a 3,700 square foot production space with several large pieces of equipment and a few employees.
What do clients say they love most about Capital Brandworks?
We’re always asking for feedback – both positive and negative – so that we can improve the company and tailor our services to better meet their needs. I think our customers appreciate that.
What are some of your fondest memories or biggest success since you’ve opened?
We underwent a pretty significant upgrade after we assumed ownership of the previous business in 2018. We reorganized the production space, upgraded equipment, and renovated the offices. The last pieces of the puzzle were put in place in February of 2020, right before the pandemic hit. Timing wasn’t ideal but it felt great to finally have the shop positioned well for the future.
What’s next for you and your business?
The silver lining of the pandemic was that – after our upgrades were completed in February 2020 – the downtime allowed us to really dial in our processes and improve our quality. We’re positioned well for the future and look forward to growing from here.
Are there any fun facts you would like residents and visitors to know?
I think what surprises most people – and what definitely surprised me when we jumped into the production side of the business – is just how much goes into printing a design on a t-shirt. It can be quite the process with many variables. The complexity of it is what keeps us engaged and coming back for more every day.
When you’re not working, where in Fairfax City do you like to spend your time?
Unfortunately for me, I live out in Prince William County so most of my time not working is spent commuting. I do, however, try to support some of the local restaurants by ordering carryout or delivery for lunch once a week.
How can people follow you on social media?
