History? It’s Everywhere.
First, there’s our rich history—the town was founded in 1805 and boasts the gorgeous backdrop to prove it. (Think stately antebellum homes and buildings that are official historic landmarks. The place looks like a movie set, and sometimes it actually is.)
And yes, George Washington hung out here. And if it weren’t for Mount Vernon, we’re pretty sure he would have opened up a boutique tech firm with foosball tables in the lobby for employee breaks.
Dynamic Culture.
While we love our past, the city of 24,000 people is very much a vibrant, diverse and forward-thinking community in its 6.2 square miles. We also have the biggest university in the Commonwealth of Virginia (George Mason University) literally in our back yard. The institution is also among the top in the country for innovation as a research-and-business university.
And we have the national accolades to back up our words.
Fairfax City is typically ranked among the top places to live nationally, and US News & World Report recently ranked us the 6th Healthiest City in the country—accounting for overall criteria like income ($105,297; national average, $45,114) and education (advanced degree: 60.4%; national average, 27.3%).
